Why is lingerie maintenance important?
Caring for your lingerie is essential to keep your delicate pieces of fabric looking beautiful and comfortable over the long term. Lingerie is made of fabrics such as lace and mesh mainly, often with stretchy fibers. It is therefore important to take good care of it to prevent the lingerie from becoming too stretchy and no longer fitting like the first day. Caring for lingerie also prevents the fabric from deteriorating and the quality from diminishing over time.
How to care for your lace and mesh lingerie?
Although most washing machines now have a "delicate cycle" option, we recommend washing your delicate fabric lingerie by hand, ideally.
Here are the steps to hand wash your lingerie:
- In a sink, take one piece of lingerie at a time in your hands. Then, with a delicate unscented soap suitable for lingerie, available in powder or liquid form, you can apply to your lingerie by gently rubbing the fabric to create a lather.
- Afterwards, you can rinse the piece of lingerie thoroughly under the tap and leave it to soak on a towel. Avoid twisting or wringing them.
- Finally, you can hang your lingerie to air dry.
- Ideally, hang your lingerie or fold it there to store it in an available drawer to maintain its shape and prevent it from becoming too elastic.
If you are not interested in this method of maintenance, it is possible to use the washing machine. However, it is important to keep in mind that it is a more risky interview than hand washing for your delicate lingerie pieces.
Caring for your lingerie: machine washing as a second resort
Here are the steps to washing your lingerie in the machine:
- Place your lingerie in a washing bag, also available for swimwear.
- Place the washing bag in the washing machine on a delicate cycle with cold water. Please note that this option takes much longer than a normal cycle, but the low temperature cycle is more environmentally friendly.
- Once the wash is complete, remove the lingerie from the wash bag and hang it out to air dry.
- Ideally, hang your lingerie or fold it to store it in a drawer to maintain its shape and prevent it from becoming too stretchy.
Please note that for lingerie pieces made from silk fibers, such as fabrics using the satin technique, machine washing is not recommended at all. Hand washing would therefore be preferred for better care of delicate lingerie.
